Is a Part-time Job Right for You?
The first thing you need to know is that a part-time job is not for everybody. Clearly, if you work 20 hours per week, perhaps a bit more or less, you will earn a paycheck that is smaller than what you’d get if you were employed full time. That’s simple logic. If you work less … you get paid less.
Is that what you want? Perhaps it is if you’re a stay-at-home mom with children still young enough to require lots of attention and supervision from you. Perhaps you’re a stay-at-home dad. If so, the very same rules apply.
Part-time jobs are often perfect for retirees who are still young enough and in possession of enough personal vitality to put their time to good and productive use. Such people are simply not ready for the rocking chair. Their energy level demands that they do something they’ve done for most of their adult lives - work.
College kids often seem ideally-suited for part-time jobs. Their scholastic schedules make it virtually impossible to work full time. And yet, they often need money to supplement the allowances they receive from their parents. A decent part-time job can help a college guy or girl enjoy the feeling of always having a few dollars in his or her pocket – without interfering with school work.
Importantly, there are always a lot of very good part-time jobs available locally. Retail shops at the mall are generally in need of sales help. Restaurants, bars and cafes are forever seeking the services of wait staff. Local service stations frequently hire “gas jockeys.” The hospital needs interns. The multiplex is trying to find a reliable cashier. Jobs are everywhere … even when the economy is performing poorly.
And part-time jobs are even more readily available. Employers like to hire people to work less than full time because those employees are generally ineligible for the benefits given to full time personnel. Obviously, that provides the employer with significant savings … even though he is benefitting from the same work performance he would receive if you were a permanent, full time employee.
Part-time work clearly benefits both sides. Your employer gets the reliable help he needs (from you) and you get the chance to earn a little extra money to help yourself or to supplement the family’s income … and you still have lots of free time to do the other things that are important to you.
In this win-win situation, you profit, your employer profits … everyone is happy everyday. It’s the perfect situation, made much, much better because the need for a tiresome and costly commute has been eliminated. Start looking locally today. The job you want is waiting for you.
By the way, there is one more thing you need to know: how to find this part-time local job without knocking yourself out searching. You can drive around town, of course, looking for Help Wanted signs … depend on word of mouth from “someone who knows” … be first in line to buy the Sunday newspaper so that you can react quickly to a Help Wanted ad or you can go online and conduct a simple search for local jobs.
You’ll be surprised at just how many part-time jobs are available in your area. You’ll be pleased that one of those jobs is perfect for you. Go get it!
